How to customize your ConvertKit subscribers' experience on your WordPress website

Tag subscribers who visit your website, display custom website content, and make your WordPress content members-only.

Tailor what subscribers see on your WordPress website

Our ConvertKit WordPress plugin is amazingly powerful! Once you've installed it on your WordPress website, you can:

(You can also display your ConvertKit Forms and other content on your WordPress website, as covered in our separate guide.)

Let's get into the steps for doing these now.

Tag subscribers who visit a certain post or page

With this feature, you can keep track of subscribers who have visited a certain post or page and tailor your interactions with them after that.

For instance, you could:

  • Add subscribers who have been tagged with "Viewed Webinar Registration Page" to a Visual Automation that sends them emails following up on their interest in your webinar

  • Promote your photography course to subscribers tagged with "Viewed Photography Blog Posts"

Start by launching the editor for the relevant post, page, or WooCommerce product page.

Scroll to the ConvertKit plugin settings at the bottom of the editor, and then use the Add a Tag setting to select a Tag that should be applied to subscribers who visit that page.

After that, enable the addition of the subscriber_id parameter to your email links in your ConvertKit account if you haven't already. Doing this helps us track your subscribers' activity on your website and tag them appropriately.

Display custom website content based on Tags

Our WordPress plugin can track the ConvertKit Tags that your website visitors have, and then show them different website content accordingly.

This is helpful for situations such as:

  • Changing your blog content for repeat visitors

  • Upselling different products on your sales pages to existing customers

The custom content feature is available only on the WordPress Classic Editor at this time, so install and activate the Classic Editor plugin on your website if you'll be displaying custom content on a post or page.

NOTE: There's no need to install the plugin if you intend to display custom content on WooCommerce product pages. That's because these pages currently use the Classic Editor by default.

Next, navigate to the post, page, or WooCommerce product page on which you want to display custom content.

At the place in your content where you want your custom content to appear, click the ConvertKit Custom Content icon on the Classic Editor's toolbar:

In the window that pops up, select the ConvertKit Tag that website visitors need to have to view your custom content:

Click Insert, and we'll add shortcode tags associated with your chosen ConvertKit Tag.

Fill out your custom content between the shortcode's start and end tags. This content will be displayed to only subscribers with the chosen ConvertKit Tag.

Last but not least, enable the addition of the subscriber_id parameter to your email links in your ConvertKit account if you haven't already. This helps us identify subscribers visiting your website, and their Tags, so we can show them the right content.

Make your WordPress content members-only

Make your posts, pages, or WooCommerce product pages available to only subscribers who have a certain ConvertKit Tag or bought a certain ConvertKit Commerce product.

You can create two types of members-only content:

Here's how.

Make a whole post or page members-only

Under this option, the post, page, or WooCommerce product page will show a short preview of the start of your content, with the rest being members-only.

Launch the editor for the post or page you want to make members-only.

Scroll to the ConvertKit plugin settings at the bottom of the editor. Use the Member Content setting to select the Tag or ConvertKit Commerce product that visitors must have to view your content.

Publish your post or page as usual after that.

If you'd like, you can also customize the text that visitors see when interacting with your members-only content.

Make part of a page members-only

Under this option, you can create pages that partially contain members-only content. Think of this as adding a "Read More" divider to the page, where only members can view the content below it.

To set this up, click the Add New Member Content button at the top of the Pages page.

Clicking the button will launch a Member Content Setup Wizard:

Select the type of members-only content you are offering (such as a paid download or a course), and then configure the content using the provided fields.

When you've completed the setup, you'll be directed to the page editor. Add your members-only content below the content accessible to all visitors.

If needed, scroll down the page to use the Member Content setting to change the Tag or ConvertKit Commerce product that visitors must have to view your members-only content.

Publish your page as usual after that.

You can also customize the text that visitors see when interacting with your members-only content.

Customize your Member Content text

Click Settings on your WordPress sidebar, followed by ConvertKit.

Navigate to the Member Content tab and customize your subscribe text, subscribe button text, email text, and more. You can also choose whether to let search engine crawlers access your members-only content for indexing purposes.

Click the Save Changes button to update your settings.
