It’s easy to create a new, custom email template if our built-in email templates aren’t quite right. 

Let’s do this. 

Getting Started

One thing to note about email templates is that they require certain elements in order to function properly. 

For this reason, we recommend using one of our existing templates as a base, and then adding your modifications from there, instead of starting from scratch.

 This is because our default templates already include all of that required stuff, so you can just leave it in there and style around it!

Duplicating an Existing Template

Here’s how to create a custom template using an existing template as the base: 

1. From the templates overview page, click one one of our default templates at the top of the page, which is closest to the look you want to achieve. (You’ll still be customizing it, but you may as well start off with a ‘base’ that is similar to the end result that you want.)

2. In the page that opens up, highlight + copy all of the code for the template. In this example, we’ll use the code from the ‘Modern’ template as our base:

3.  Go back to the main templates page and click the ‘New email template’ button in the right sidebar.

4. Paste the template code into the code editor, and give your template a name:

5. Hit the red ‘Save’ button in the bottom right hand corner of the page.

Voilà! You now have your own custom email template!

...Okay, it’s not really custom yet. Let's do that now. 

Customizing your email template

This is the fun part! 

Our templates are built on HTML and CSS, so that’s what you’ll need to modify in order to change the look.

NOTE: Anything in between the <style> & </style>  tags in your template code is the CSS styling. Anything outside of that is the HTML.

If you used ‘Modern’ or ‘Classic’ as your base template code, you’ll actually already have quite a bit of styling in there to work with.

The {{ message_content }} tag will be replaced by the actual content of your email.

Just make your HTML/CSS changes in the code editor, and preview them using the ‘Preview Layout’ button in the right sidebar. When you like what you see, click the ‘Save’ button in the bottom right of the page.

Don’t forget!

After all of your customizations are done, don’t forget to make your new template your default.

NOTE: This is assuming you want all your emails to use it by default going forward. If not, skip this step, and just manually select it from the dropdown for the emails you want to use it for.

To do so, just click the ‘Use this template’ button on the templates overview page.

A green checkmark will appear next to it:

And you’re good to go! 😊
