How to ask people to be on your email list
Growing your email list is one of the most important things you can do to build your audience! But when you're getting started it's difficult to know how to start communicating with people and ask them to be on your list. We created a few simple email scripts to give you a little guidance on how to ask people! Customize the content to fit your topic and you'll be ready to start!
For example, in the first outreach email below we're trying to get people to sign up for our health and fitness business. We recommend an email that focuses on:
- What you’re working on now
- What the reader will get
- What you plan on doing in the next 3 months
- Your mission
- Asking for the email!
First outreach email script
Focus: What you’re working on now
I’ve been working for the past month to launch my new fitness program: The Simple Gym! What’s great about this program is that you don’t need any weights or equipment to complete the workouts, and can do them all at home!
What the reader will get
Each week I’ll share 3 workouts exclusively with my email community, and share fitness articles and videos on my website so that you can achieve the body you deserve.
What you plan on doing in the next 3 months
Eventually I’ll offer personalized fitness and nutrition plans for people who want more coaching, and digital products (ebooks and courses) to help you reach specific goals.
My goal, or mission, for the project is to help people feel great, have more energy, and love their bodies.
If you’re want to have the weekly workouts and videos sent directly to you, reply here and I’ll add you to my email list. Or, if you’re not a fan, but you know someone who is, I’d love an introduction to see if they might be interested in joining!
Thanks so much!

Quick win email
I know you’re excited about how <TOPIC> is coming together, I certainly have been encouraged with the feedback so far.
I wanted to say thank you and share something I made today that will help you (solve the primary problem your subscribers have).
Many of you have said (restate the problem), and that’s why I (did this thing to solve the problem)!
Consider this a quick and dirty guide to getting started on <TOPIC>. I know many of you have emailed me about the rest of the tips, and I didn't want everyone to have to wait to have this information. Link to resources, a couple tips, etc.
Thanks again for being a part of this, and send along any suggestions have!
What to do next in ConvertKit
Once someone confirms that they want to be on your list, you can add them manually using the + button on the subscriber page. Add them to whichever tag or tags you've set up to organize subscribers.
You'll also want to get started on that welcome sequence so new subscribers can get to know you, and connect your forms and/or landing pages to the sequence in a visual automation. If you want one to get you started, copy this one directly to your account! Then you can also use the welcome sequence ideas from this article to start writing!
