Get your domain ready for serving ads!

When setting up ConvertKit Ads, you'll need to update your domain settings:

This involves adding a custom domain to your account. And while you don't need a verified sending domain for serving ads, you'll need to add a DMARC record to it if you use one.

NOTE: A custom domain is the domain you'll use for the URLs of ConvertKit pages like your Creator Profile and Landing Pages. It can be either a top-level domain like yourdomain.com or a subdomain like pages.yourdomain.com.

Meanwhile, your verified sending domain is a top-level domain that we'll use for sending your emails on your behalf. There is a different process for setting it up compared to the process for setting up a custom domain.

A verified sending domain can be the same top-level domain you use for your custom domain, but it cannot be a subdomain.

Here, we'll go through the domain settings you'll need to update, depending on whether you've set up a custom domain and/or a verified sending domain for your account:

Check which scenario applies to you, then take action accordingly!

Scenario 1: You haven't set up either a custom domain or a verified sending domain

Follow the instructions here to set up a custom domain for your account. That's it!

You can then proceed with the rest of the steps for setting up ConvertKit Ads.

Don't worry about not having a verified sending domain—you won't need it for running ads.

(But if you do set up the domain you're using as your custom domain as a verified sending domain in the future, follow the steps in Scenario 4 to prepare your verified sending domain for serving ads.)

Scenario 2: You haven't set up a custom domain, but you have a verified sending domain

Follow the instructions here to set up a custom domain for your account first.

After that, if the domain you're using for your custom domain is the same as that for your verified sending domain, follow the instructions here to add a DMARC record to your verified sending domain.

Your DMARC record may take 24 to 48 hours to take effect. In the meantime, you can finish up the process for setting up ConvertKit Ads.

But if the domain you're using for your custom domain is different from the domain you're using for your verified sending domain, you don't need to add a DMARC record to your verified sending domain. You may proceed with the rest of the steps for setting up ConvertKit Ads.

Scenario 3: You've set up a custom domain but not a verified sending domain

No domain setting changes needed.

You have a custom domain set up, so you're good to go! (You don't need a verified sending domain to set up email ads.)

You can go ahead with the rest of the ConvertKit Ads setup process. 😄

Scenario 4: You've set up both a custom domain and a verified sending domain

Your custom domain is set up, so you don't need to do anything to it.

If you've used the same domain for both your custom domain and verified sending domain, you'll need to add a DMARC record to your verified sending domain.

After that, go on to finish setting up ConvertKit Ads.

But if you've used different domains for your custom domain and verified sending domain, you don't need to add a DMARC record to your verified sending domain. Instead, you can proceed with the rest of the steps for setting up ConvertKit Ads.
